AIVAZOVSKY Ivan Constantinovich
1817-1900
was a Russian painter of Armenian descent, most famous for his seascapes, which constitute more than half of his paintings.Contents.
Aivazovsky was born in the town of Feodosiya, Crimea, to a poor Armenian family. His parents family name was Aivazian. Some of artist's paintings bear a signature, in Armenian letters, "Hovhannes Aivazian". His talent as an artist earned him sponsorship and entry to the Simferopol gymnasium ¹1 and later the St.Petersburg Academy of Arts, from which he graduated with the gold medal. Earning awards for his early landscapes and seascapes, he went on to paint a series of portraits of Crimean coastal towns before traveling throughout Europe. In later life, his paintings of naval scenes earned him a longstanding commission from the Russian Navy.
In 1845, Aivazovsky went to Istanbul upon the invitation of Sultan Abdulmecid, a city he was to travel to eight times between 1845-1890. During his long sojourn in Istanbul, Aivazovsky was commissioned for a number of paintings as a court painter by the Ottoman Sultans Abdulmecid, Abdulaziz and Abdulhamid, 30 of which are currently on display in the Ottoman Imperial Palace, the Dolmabahce Museum and many others at various other museums in Turkey.
Due to his long life in art, Aivazovsky became the most prolific Russian painter of his time. He left over 6,000 works at his death in 1900. With funds earned during his successful career as an artist he opened an art school and gallery in his home town of Feodosiya.

ALTMANN Alexander
1885 – after 1992
was an Orthodox Jewish scholar and rabbi born in Kaschau, Austria-Hungary, today Kosice, Slovakia. He emigrated to England in 1938 and later settled in the United States, working productively for a decade and a half as a professor within the Philosophy Department at Brandeis University. He is best known for his studies of the thought of Moses Mendelssohn, and was indeed the leading Mendelssohn scholar since the time of Mendelssohn himself (Arkush 1989). He also made important contributions to the study of Jewish mysticism, and for a large part of his career he was the only scholar in the United States working on this subject in a purely academic setting (Fine 1989). Among the many Brandeis students whose work he supervised in this area were Arthur Green, Lawrence Fine, and Daniel Matt.
Altmann was the son of the Chief Rabbi of Trier, one of the oldest Jewish communities in Germany. Altmann received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Berlin in 1931, writing his dissertation on the philosophy of Max Scheler, and was ordained rabbi by the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin in the same year. From 1931 to 1938 he served as rabbi in Berlin and professor of Jewish philosophy at the Seminary. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938, Altmann served as communal rabbi in Manchester, England from 1938 to 1959. There, in addition to his responsibilities as a community leader, he continued to independently pursue his scholarly studies, publishing in 1946 a translation and commentary of Saadia's Beliefs and Opinions. His scholarly activities ultimately led him to found and direct the Institute of Jewish Studies from 1953 to 1958, which at the time was an independent institution. He there edited the Journal of Jewish Studies and Scripta Judaica and authored his work on Isaac Israeli. After securing the future of the Institute of Jewish Studies by bringing it under the auspices of the University College London, in 1959 he left England to join the faculty of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Aged 53 at this time and the author of almost 100 publications, the Brandeis appointment was for Altmann his first university position (Mendes-Flohr 1998). He served at Brandeis as the Philip W. Lown Professor of Jewish Philosophy and History of Ideas beginning in 1959 and until his promotion to Professor Emeritus and subsequent retirement in 1976. According to Ivry (1989), Altmann was also a major force in acquiring for Brandeis the complete Vatican Hebraica collection on microfilm.
From 1976 to 1978 he was a visiting professor at Harvard and at Hebrew University, and from 1978 until his death he was an Associate at the Harvard University Center for Jewish Studies. During his entire residence in the Boston area (Newton Centre, to be precise), he always made his home a meeting place for Jewish scholars and students (Ivry 1998), often hosting them for Sabbath meals. Altmann's thirst for new knowledge never abated, even in his later years. Fine (1989) tells of attending a class on Coptic language given at Brandeis University in the early seventies, only to find there—as a fellow student—the 65-year-old Alexander Altmann, eager to acquire a new skill.

He studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Nice from 1946 to 1949 and then continued his studies for two years at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. When the last letter of his name was accidentally forgotten on a catalogue cover in 1958, he decided to keep this spelling.

He propagated of modern art tirelessly.
He has illustrated, edited and published several almanacs, books, magazines. Burliuk hs lived in Japan (1920-1922), and then from 1922 in USA; published the journal “Tsvet I Rifma” (Color and Rhyme). collaborated with the newspaper “Voice of Russia” until 1940, published a monograph on Nikolai Roerich, the poems which he has himself illustrated; published the book “Entelikhism”, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Russian Futurism (1930). In 1930 David Burliuk has become a U.S. citizen.
Burliuk's American period had almost nothing in common with his Russian period. It was certainly not Futurism and not classical Avant-garde. Yet at the same time it was not Naturalism and certainly not Realism in the full sense. His scenes with cows, horses, men and womenfolk, and all of his canvases are textural, like in his early works. He created his own picturesque world of the benign, simple existence led by common people, with their genuine joie de vivre. May be this was the way he expressed his dream of an harmonious future for mankind, which he named Futurism.

VASNECOV Jurij Alekseevitch
1900-1973
Born in a family the priest. J.A.Vasnetsov consisted in the remote relationship with Victor and Apollinariem Vasnetsovymi. Afflicted with desire to become the artist, it in 1921 has arrived to Petrograd and has arrived on picturesque faculty GSHM (after Vhutemas); the young artist has successfully finished study in 1926. In search of earnings has started to co-operate with department of the children's and youthful literature of the State publishing house where under V.V. Lebedev's art management has happily found itself in interpretation by that and images of Russian folklore - fairy tales and mainly “gju-teshek” in which is better its natural bent for to humour, grotesque and kind irony was satisfied.
In 1930th to it have brought popularity of an illustration to books "Bog", "Konjok-gorbunok" by P.P.Kriisch, «3 pigs» by K.I.Chukovskiy, «Three bears»by L.I.Tolstoy.
Then it did excellent - elegant and fascinating - litography for children, based on the same subject motives. In days of the war, spent at first in Molotove (Perm), then in Zagorsk (Sergiev Posad) where it consisted the main artist of Institute of a toy, Vasnetsov has executed poetical illustrations to «English national songs»by S.J.Marshak (1943), and then to its book «Koshkin the house» (1947). New success illustrations to folklore collections «Chudodejnoe kolechko» (1947) and «have brought to it Fables in persons» (1948).
Widely known collections "Ladushki" (1964) and "Raduga-duga" (1969) became an original result of its long-term activity. Employment by painting were an overall objective of a life of Vasnetsova always, and to this purpose it went with fanatical persistence: worked independently, was engaged under the direction of K.S.Malevich in Ginhuke, it was trained also in postgraduate study at All-Russia AH.
In 1932 34 he has created some paintings («the Lady with a mouse», «the Still-life with a hat and a bottle», etc.) In which has proved as very large master who has successfully connected refined picturesque culture of time with tradition of national "market" art which he appreciated and loved. But it later finding of has coincided with begun then campaign of struggle against a formalism. Being afraid of ideological prosecutions (already had time to concern its book drawing), Vasnetsov has made painting by secret employment and showed it only to close people. In the landscapes and still-lifes, it is underlined simple on their motives and extremely refined under the picturesque form, it reached impressing results, originally reviving traditions of Russian primitiveness. But these works practically to anybody were not known.

ZVEREV Anatolij Timofeevich1931-1986
Picasso once described Zverev as a great Russian artist draughtsman. He was bom in 1931 and died in 1986 at the age of 55. He was an absolute individualist marked by a hard life. He modelled himself on Leonardo da Vinci, whose treatise on painting served him as a guide in his own art. His artistic development was more influenced by his hard life than by his art studies.
He painted and exhibited in the Sokolniki Park. As he himself remarked, he was always unlucky, but the drawing and painting remained unaffected. He exhibited in French, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom and the USA
